Country placement
August 23rd, 2006 by adrilyn.Hi, everyone I was nominated a couple days ago to serve in Africa as a health extension volunteer starting March 2007. I was just wondering if anyone has any idea how much say we have, if any, as far as country of service. I wouldn’t be totally opposed to any particular country, but I do have some preferences. I just would be interested in knowing whether a nominee’s preferences have anything to do with where he/she is placed, or if it’s completely out of our hands. Do they even ask, or would I have to get in touch with someone? Also, I’d like to get my dreaded medical business taken care of ASAP, but I haven’t received any paperwork yet. What do I need to make appointments for? Should I just wait until I receive all the documents, or will that be cutting it too close? Thanks, Adrienne

You can print the documents from your toolkit. The ones that you print yourself are the same content, but they look different than the official ones. I did not have a doctor or a dentist so I printed the forms and took them with me to be sure that whoever I choose to go to was capable of performing all the test, x-rays, exams, etcI would need done.
I scheduled my appointments before the paper work came, but I had the paperwork by the time the actual appointment day came.
Or, you can just wait until to get all the documents, I personally don’t think it would be cutting it to close.
Once you get the paper work it’s pretty easy.
Just go to the doctor and dentist, get it filled out, and get it turned in. -Do this ASAP-
The hard part is waiting for the invitation (that’s what I’m doing right now)

hey adrienne
i just finished my paperwork, and was wondering how long after you sent in all your paperwork and had your interview did they let you know where you’ll be going?

Do you mean the application? If so, as soon as I submitted my application and all my references, I scheduled an interview for that same week. My recruiter basically told me at the interview that I’d be nominated for my region of preference, and she actually gave me a choice of a few projects in that region — all pertaining to health, also my preference. I don’t yet know what country I’ll be going to, though. I guess I won’t know that until a couple months (or less) before departure.
