laptops

January 27th, 2007 by benisa.

I’m planning on going to Costa Rica this March to work as a rural community development volunteer. Jusging from the comments on other PCVs blogs and chats with returned volunteeers, a lot of people are really happy they brought along their laptops. Is it worthwhile to buy a cheap laptop for the Peace Corps or totally unneccessary? I would love to hear other people’s thoughts on the subject.

Thanks!

I am a Agricultural Marketing volunteer in Guatemala and I didn’t bring my laptop thinking it would get stolen or wouldn’t need it. Then my parents brought it down to me 7months into my service and I am very happy now. I use it for pre-writing emails to send in internet cafes, doing work, journal, organizing pictures (www.flickr.com/photos/peacecorpsolivia) and watching dvds. I think if you have one its a good idea to take it.

    Alicia,

If you get a laptop, I would recommend buying a good backpack which can be used to discretely hide it. I studied abroad at Veritas in San Jose and lots of students had laptops. You just need to remember to keep it well hidden. I had several friends who had their computers stolen when it became apparent they carried them to school on a daily basis.
