Where to Go with Third Goal
March 8th, 2005 by Scott Stadum.Jason has asked that I submit any ideas about what possible uses Third Goal might incorporate into it to benefit the PC community. The simplest addition would be utilizing the wiki plug-in for Word Press and archiving ideas, stories and projects of Peace Corps Volunteers and Returned Peace Corps Volunteers.
With the wiki, you could archive lengthy stories; you could add projects ideas, funding information, basically anything that might be remotely useful to the volunteer community.
What do you think? Would anyone be interested in utilizing a wiki to add their ideas, thoughts, and stories in addition to the blog?

corps_kid,
It’s nice to have you involved and supportive of Third Goal. Thanks.
I’ve considered the Wiki idea for Third Goal. In fact, I thought I came across a Peace Corps wiki you developed. Though I can’t find the link right now, the wiki I found had fallen victim to graffiti.
Though I have looked at a few of the wiki plug-ins for WordPress, I feel our current audience is too small to support one. Once Third Goal obtains a larger user base, a wiki addition could thrive. At our current size, I feel a wiki is too much of a liability.
I suppose my other hesitation is regarding the purpose of Third Goal. I’d like the purpose of Third Goal to be “To help Peace Corps volunteers share their stories and to help the rest of the world find them.” At least something like that (anyone a poet or linguist who can better state this objective?).
Blogs, photo blogs, podcasts, and some other new mediums are great tools volunteers can use to tell stories as they happen. Wikis, however, are best use to collaborate on contextual projects that are best suited for reference.
Don’t get me wrong, I love wikis, Wikipedia in particular. If you haven’t noticed, while within a Third Goal country category, you can click on the country name to be taken directly to its Wikipedia entry.
Though I like your wiki idea for Third Goal, I have some reservations. Let’s see if Third Goal’s blogging feature takes off.
