Friends of Peace Corps at Meetup.com

April 17th, 2005 by Scott Stadum.

I was reading in the latest Wired mag about a man who put together a volunteer architectural organization that will benefit communities struck by disaster through open source design and information sharing. Through this project, aid organizations will be able to build inexpensive, effective semi-permanent housing. What struck me was that was that Architecture for Humanity was able to use Meetup.com to mobilize folks for philanthropic work. I’m not that familiar with MeetUp but thought this would be perfect for helping out Peace Corps.

As we work on our projects and secondary project within our host countries, the reality of finding funding and resources can sometime be grim. What I am interested in is organizing a Friends of Peace Corps group on Meetup.com that transcends specific countries and helps volunteers regardless of country or which state they originate from. Does anything like this exist at the moment? And if not, is any current PCV or RPCV or family member of a Peace Corps volunteer interested in this venture? We need all the help we can get for our projects and Peace Corps doesn’t do enough for us in terms of using the internet to it’s potential to help us do our job.
