Bring the world home – host an international teenager!

Hi,

I spent 2006-2008 in Palau, a Pacific island nation that is no more than a tiny dot on a world map but has left a much more significant mark on my heart and who I am. I could not attempt to describe my experience in a simple blog, but if you do want to hear more, just let me know – I could write for hours about it.

I now work for Youth For Understanding, a nonprofit high school exchange organization. Knowing that RPCV’s and other Peace Corps enthusiasts are excited about intercultural exchange opportunities, I am posting this as an invitation for you to consider hosting an international exchange student this coming school year. YFU hosts students from over 60 countries around the world, including from several predominantly Muslim countries as part of a specific outreach to bridge the gap between the United States and the Muslim world. If you know anybody who would benefit from this type of cultural exposure, please share this information with them. Pacific Island Experiences

Hey Everybody

I’m interested in being assigned to a Island in the Pacific so I’m looking for somebody to tell me about their experiences. I’m really interested in hearing about your first 6 months and your final 6 months.

I curious to know about how you learned to deal with a completely new environment: the emotional, physical, and mental struggles you experienced; the ups and downs of the living situations you had, the people (oh the people); and more importantly, what was your dealing strategy and how do you think you finished your assignment.

I have been nominated for the South Pacific, and judging by the work descriptions for the South Pacific it looks like I am heading for Palua or Micronesia, in youth vocational education. I am of course curious if you have served in these areas or are serving did / are you feeling positive about your experience. Are you happy with your placement?

Questions about life in the Pacific Islands or Caribbean

Hi, my name is Natalie and I’ve applied for the peace corps to serve in either the pacific islands or the caribbean. I’ve already undergone 2 interviews and I’m at the point right now where I’m supposed to get ahold of returned volunteers from those areas. So if you are currently serving somewhere in Fiji, Micronesia, Belize, etc. please let me know about your experience, including concerns about safety, food, if there is phone/internet access, and just life in general.
