Eastern Europe Sept 2007

January 14th, 2007 by Cris.

So, I’m new to this site. It’s great—nice to find a site with posts of future PC vols. I was nominated to Eastern Europe leaving Sept 2007 doing Agribusiness work. Kind of an interesting nomination, given my background. I have been a homebuilding contractor for 25 years (read:burned out on working for wealthy people that don’t appreciate what they have), but because I grew up on a farm, my recruiter encouraged me to take the Agribusiness nomination over Business Development or Construction. I agreed to the Agribusiness, as I thought I might be in more of a rural setting than urban, which I would prefer–not big on wearing the coat and tie. I would really like to hear from anyone else who has been nominated to a similar program. I have studied all the PC countries in E. Europe, and the only ones that mention Agribusiness are Moldova, Romania, and Kygyz Republic farther east. I am somewhat certain the program I’m nominated to is in Moldova. But I have to remember PC could change and send me most anywhere. I have cleared my medical, dental, legal, etc. so it’s up to Placement, now. I’m very excited and looking forward to the experience! My daughter just returned from Namibia as an HIV/AIDS volunteer for PC and had a great time!

    Hey Cris,

I’m nominated for agribusiness in Africa leaving at the same time you are. Where did you find the best info on which countries had agribusiness projects? I’ve narrowed the list of African countries down to about 13, only based on the fact that the assignment requires knowledge of French and so they are the countries where French is an official language. I still can’t be sure though. My recruiter told me the program had some specific focus in economics and marketing. I’m excited. Email me if you’d like (ryan.reichert@gmail.com)

ryan - my son is a PCV in Mali. it is a french speaking country. at first he was a little disappointed in the assignment as he had been hoping to go to south america. however, once he got there, he changed his mind and was glad to be sent to Mali. the people are very friendly and the country is politically stable. it is very hot, but i guess you get used to that. there are quite a few volunteers there. - jill

    Cris,

This morning, I received a call from my recruiter - I’ve been nominated for September 2007 in Eastern Europe as well! My focus will be in Non-Governmental Organizational Development. I’m about to enter the medical clearance process - I hear it can be time consuming. Any advice?

    Thanks,
    Erin

    Erin,

Medical clearance is time consuming, especially in my case. I had recent ACL reconstruction knee surgery, and shoulder surgery all in the last three years. But my clearance sailed right through; PC wanted doctor follow-ups on both, then were satisfied. So, depending on what your medical history is, you should have no problem, but it does take time. Just be patient. From when I submitted all my medical and dental information to when I was medically and dentally cleared by PC was just about two months, to give you an idea of what to expect.
    Good luck!

    Cris
