Africa Bound: September 2005
May 23rd, 2005 by deciso.Hi folks! I’ve been nominated for service beginning somewhere in Sub-Saharan African in September 2005. Everything’s been going so fast… I submitted my app on May 1 and now I’m working on the medical evaluations…
Psyched though. Is there anyone else out there who is Africa-bound? Anyone in the Boston area who just returned from Africa?
I’ll post more as I know more. This site’s a great idea, I’m going to be a big fan.

Hey there, I’m in Boston and have been nominated for Sub-Saharan Africa to leave in November. What position have you been nominated for? As of right now, I’ll be training primary education teachers. I’m moving back in with the folks in 3 weeks to save money on rent. I’m really excited about the adventure ahead!

I’m leaving (well, tentatively) for francophone Africa around August 15 doing community development. I just got my medical clearance (and that’s been a long time coming), so I’m hoping to get my definite placement within the next few weeks. We’ll see…

I just moved back to the Boston area last week from Asheville, NC. I am leaving for West Africa on September 21 2005. This has been an unexpected change from my original nominated assignment in Latin America. Perhaps destiny has stepped in! My assignment consists of sustainable agriculture and health. Best wishes to you all!

I just my nomination for Pacific Islands - May 29, 2005. This medical stuff is a lot to get through but, I am extremely excited. I am jealous though, I have always wanted to live in Africa, but my nomination choices were pretty slim, as my french is AWFUL. - - Bon Chance!

I got my nomination to teach upper level math in Africa. Leaving in November. Anybody know how long it takes to hear back from the medical clearance people?

hey matt,
It was a month before PC looked at my file (that was only after I called about 5 times to ask the status). Then I found out that I lacked two lab reports, so I’m still not cleared! It takes a long time, regardless. I know that you HAVE to be medically cleared at least 1 month before your tentative departure date, or else you will lose your spot and they will reassign you.

I was slated to go to the Pacific Islands and at the last moment was told I would be getting an invite for sub-saharan Africa instead… Did anyone else experience this kind of quick switch?

hey ~
did you find out where you’re going? Up to about a month ago ‘Sept sub-Saharan Africa’ was all I knew, but now I’m leaving for Cameroon Sept. 28th.

I was nominated SubSaharan Africa for September 05 too! Doing health extension and HIV prevention. Is anyone else nominated for the same place and program?

Hi there,
I am currently in the process of applying to the Peace Corps. I am very excited about the possibility of serving, however, have some safety concerns. If you have the time, I would greatly appreciate any insights you provide into the issue. Do you feel safe where you serve? Do you have a support network from the program, local community members and/or other volunteers in the area? Again, any advice or concerns shared would be greatly appreciated. Please take care and I hope to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Robyn
