Tanzania Sept. ‘06
June 27th, 2006 by gravitythread.Hey everybody. I got word that I’ll be teaching somewhere in Tanzania. Math & Science, which is the field I wanted. Sicne then I’ve just been sitting around wanting to get in contact with some other PCVs.
Viola! Here I am.
Seek and you will find. Ask and you will recieve. So, first question: What do you pack?

hey, I’m headed to Tanzania also, teaching high school physics, or so they tell me now. Have you found out any useful information yet? Looking forward to September!

Useful information… Well, I’ve been searching online for blogs by PCVs in Tanzania, and they are good to read. They’ve helped me get a little more feel for what to expect. I’ve been trying to learn some Swahili from books I’ve checked out at the library, but it’s slow going. The vocabulary sounds so different that it doesn’t stick in my head. (How do you say derivative in Swahili?)
Also, the BBC has some of its news casts done in Swahili, and those are fun to listen to, even if they make no sense to me yet.
Oh, do you know if the teaching is done in English?

Since I’m doing math education, I’m sure my degree in engineering was a big factor. I think the biggest programs in Tanzania are Health, and Education, so if you shoot for those you’ll probably do well.

I will also be teaching Math in Tanzania. As an engineering major I think that is why they placed me as a math teacher. I leave for TZ sept 21. hopefully I’ll see you guys there.

Hola! I’m also going to be teaching math in Tanzania, starting in a month.
From what I’ve read, teaching (secondary school and higher) appears to be done in English.
