Asians and Eastern Europe: good/bad experiences?

August 20th, 2007 by jcBlue6.

It’s not everyday something keeps me up but for me, the hardest questions on the peace corp application is region preferences. Personally, I have regions I know I don’t want to be assigned to but that isn’t helping me or my placement officer. At least I could say it eliminated one or two choices.

So, I have a question for everybody. Right now, I’m being considered for Eastern Europe…oh and by golly, here is the kicker. I’m Asian. Honestly, I’m not sure how a male of asian decent would be treated in tight communities of Eastern Europe but I would like some advice. Who here has been to assigned to eastern europe; and who here is asian and has been assigned to eastern europe? I know where ever I go, I’m going to have some time of stereotype against me but that I could handle. I just wonder if eastern european countries are going to accept me because I been hearing some bad things about a asian going into eastern europe

So please, past volunteers, current volunteers, and all future volunteers…. I need your help. What is your opinion of the matter

best,

The Upcoming PC Kid

Once they give you an assignment, you can refuse once. I refused Africa and ended up in Central America. It’s not Fiji, but it was nice.

As far as the security issue; Idon’t know, but it wouldn’t hurt to look into areas where there are Asians. Fiji, Thailand, Philippines, etc. they’re in the middle of some military coups right now and a PCV was murdered, but thatmay be a new policy and Congress is trying to figure out how PC stays in country with a country agreement with a government that effectively no longer exists and why PC endorses military juntas…….

Anyway, I’d look around the Pacific Rim.

Part of the Peace Corps experience is to be in a different culture. To show others that the USA is made up of all colors and shapes. The question should not be how you will be treated but rather were your talents can be best used. That will, in the end be were the Peace Corps places you anyway.

I served years ago and your choices were of little importance, then. I served in the Philippines and back then there concern wasn’t so much how you looked but were you were from. For a young white women the big question was, Where is your husband? That most likely is not the case now, but I wonder…

Just keep a journal, work hard and enjoy.
