Laptops?????

March 14th, 2007 by jenny.

I am leaving in May for Panama and I have been doing research for laptops but I am not sure as to what I should do. I know that in most places there is no electricity and I should get a laptop with a battery but I have been told that the batteries run out so quickly. I was wondering if anyon has any suggestions as to what I should be buying. Thanks so much I am going nuts here!!!

I would check out http://www.cheaplaptops.org.uk as they are a good information source on all cheap laptops, they have great information plus you can ask them questions in their comments area. They are also in first posistion on Google.com so this tells you they are a good site.

The folks at One Laptop Per Child, have created a durable, cheap, and energy efficinet laptop, but I don’t think they are available commercially.

    Hello,
I am a Panamá RPCV (’04-’06) and am wondering what your sector is and why you feel like you need a computer. Laptops do not have good battery life, and many places you may be sent within Panamá will not have electricity. However, Panamá is a small country and it is usually not too far (unless you have 14 hour chiva ride) to go to your regional capital or a near city that does have power. In terms of a computer, I had friends that were quite happy with their Mac’s, but do realize that this is a big investment and you are heading to a place with a lot of rain and bumpy roads. My advice is to go to Panamá sans computer and then evaluate if the computer is necessary then have it shipped down or someone who is visiting bring it to you. All of the regional capitals and most of the smaller towns you will find computer cafés. Unless you are a tech head, you will be fine using the computers you will find there and since wireless still isn’t widely available you may end up using them more then you expected anyway. Entonces, Suerte y que te vaya bien!
