Shipping Out

We leave tomorrow following the first round of vaccinations. We have had a great Staging and have learned about the unique talents, strengths, and backgrounds that each of us are bringing. While a lot of Staging is learning the “nuts and bolts” of Peace Corps service as well as becoming familiar with all the safety issues, another aspect of this time is to learn about this group of individuals that we are a part of. Yesterday 24 strangers came together and already we are bonding and having fun together which should help immensely as we move into a foreign place. One of us interned with Greenpeace, another was the assistant director of admissions at a college. One of us worked in Nepal teaching Buddhist monks art while another holds five patents for electrochemical gas sensing devices. One of us raised and released a peregrine falcon in Oregon and another gave dog-sled tours on a remote glacier in Alaska. I feel so lucky to be a part of such a diverse and well-prepared group.

In the morning we begin our malaria medication and stomp on our packs to make them small enough to fit on the plane.
