Think you may be headed to Moldova?

Here are a few quick facts about PC Moldova…

PC Moldova currently has 4 programs: TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) School Based LS&HE (Life Skills and Health Education) School and Community Based COD (Community and Organizational Development) Community Based AAD (Agricultural and Agribusiness Development) Community Based

TEFLs and LS&HE trainees generally arrive in Moldova in the early summer, whereas COD and AAD trainees generally arrive in early fall.

PST (Pre-Servoce Training) is community based. (You will live with host families in a village with a group of about 7-10 volunteers in your program)

After PST you are required to live with a host family for 6 months. (Most volunteers stay with their host family the entire time)

You will find out more on the specifics of your site about 4-6 weeks into PST.

Other stuff: The majority of volunteers learn Romanian, a select few learn Russian. Internet access is available throughout the country. The majority of volunteers have power/electricity all the time. (There are random black outs) You may or may not have indoor plumbing. The furthest volunteer is about 5 hours from the capital. Married couples tend to be placed in larger villages/towns. It is not hard to be a/stay a vegetarian during service. You can find ethic food restaurants (Italian, Middle Eastern, Mexican, etc) in the capital, but the prices will be similar to what you would pay in the US (which can be a lot on a PC budget) (Un)fortunately there are a half a dozen McDonald’s in the capital. A lot of volunteers have brought their laptops and are happy they did. Most volunteers have digital cameras. (You can get this developed in larger towns and Chisinau – as well as good old film) There are ATMs available in bigger villages, towns, and in Chisinau.

    Hi there,
I am currently in the process of applying to the Peace Corps. I am very excited about the possibility of serving, however, have some safety concerns. If you have the time, I would greatly appreciate any insights you provide into the issue. Do you feel safe where you serve? Do you have a support network from the program, local community members and/or other volunteers in the area? Again, any advice or concerns shared would be greatly appreciated. Please take care and I hope to hear from you.

    Sincerely,
    Robyn

So, if I was nominated for Business Development/Agriculture in Eastern Europe, it is VERY likely I’ll be sent to Moldova, right? I just want to be sure, so I can start picking up a language book. Is the Agribusiness program usually in the Russian or Romanian speaking area? Where can I find others doing Agribusiness?
