The beginning of this journey

April 24th, 2006 by mitkit.

In September I will begin the journey of being a peace corps volunteer stationed in Tanzania, Africa. I am still in the United States, and thus far, have only gone through the application process, have accepted my invitation, adn am awaiting my staging information for September…. What does this all entail? How can I prepare for an experience which is as ambiguous as this? Most importantly, what will I be bringing with me? I will be bringing not only my cultural learning I’ve had as a citizen in the U.S., but my personal experiences, my training in the University, my history. But is this selfish? Isn’t this about sharing, learning, and aiding in the exchange between people from across the world, who aren’t as far from us as we all think? I’m only at the beginning…and there is so much more that has yet to come….

As a Tanzania RPCV, I am envious of you. It’s an incredible country, with a lot to offer. Of course, like any Peace Corps job, it’ll require some work and it’ll have its ups and downs. But Tanzania has some of the friendliest people - and that, in the end, is what I remember the most. Not to mention an excellent training staff, killer views and hikes, Zanzibar, other great PCVs…
