Urban Youth Development, Latin America
September 10th, 2007 by nativeoutsider.Hello all, like a lot of PC nominees, I’m just anxiously awaiting my medical and legal clearance. So far, I’m expected to leave in February, somewhere in Latin America, working with Urban Youth Development.
Anyone expected to leave the same time and in the same area?
Also, any of you have any ideas which country I will could likely be assigned to in Latin America?

Congrats on getting this far! We’re in Mexico and loving it. It seems like any of the countries in latin America would be cool. Once the details start coming together for you, it will be fun for you to read up on the area and find out what you like and have to look forward to. We’ve been reading about a couple of volunteers in Peru (via their blogsite) that seem to be having a great time there and taking advantage of a lot of opportunities in rural development. Good luck with your assignment!

Hello-
I too have been nominated to serve in latin America in Urban Youth Development leaving in February. I have been searching around at the different programs in central and south American and Paraguay seems like a likely spot to with this particular program. You have most likely recieved all of your info by now, I am still waiting and guessing.
Good luck

Hey Alissa,
Thanks for the response. It’s good to finally hear from someone who’s in the same boat! Yes, I’ve done some looking around and it seems like Paraguay is the place we’re heading. I haven’t received any info yet. I’m still waiting for the Nurse to give me my medical clearance. I did get a letter from a placement officer telling me to send updated items like a resume, etc.
How far along are you? When were you nominated?

Justin-
My invitation should be arriving in the next few days. I have my medical and placement clearence and recieved an e-mail that the details and official invitation were in the mail. I waited 3.5 months for my medical clearence then boom within two weeks I got all clearences and my invitation is in the mail. It is a hurry up to wait game. I will let you know when I get all of the stuff in the mail. It is a good possibility that we are heading the same place. I have also read some blogs from a girl doing urban Youth development in ecuador. So what is your story?
Thank you for writing me back it is nice to have some correspondence.

Alissa,
Congratulations! Wow, you must be excited and relieved after all of that waiting. I’m a little worried because February is relatively close so I just hope I get cleared before then…my medical paperwork wasn’t submitted to a nurse until late September.
So did you ever ever talk directly with your Placement officer, or did you just get the e-mail and that’s it?
If you like, you’re welcome to respond at my email, which is: nativeoutsider@gmail.com
Thanks for the response…and again, congrats on the invite! Justin

I was nominated in August for a youth development assignment in Central or South America leaving in early February. My clearances have been completed and now I am waiting on word from my placement officer or an invitation in the mail. I called the Washington D.C. office today and the woman I spoke with said I should receive something in the mail within 3 to 6 weeks. Sounds like an eternity! I cant wait for my invitation. Maybe you and I will volunteer together.

Hey Chrissyt,
Sounds like we’re in snyc with one another. I just got my medical clearance last week and I called the DC office today as well to find out about invitation info…unfortunatley, I just got a voice message (ha, maybe on the phone with you) so I may try back later if I don’t hear anything.
Good luck, atleast we’re in the final stretch now! Let me know when you receive your invite.

Are those of you who are headed to Central/South America already fluent or close to being fluent in Spanish? I’ve been nominated for Urban Youth Development in the Caribbean - a non Spanish speaking country because I didn’t take enough Spanish in college. Pretty bummed about that.
