Senegal/urban ag.
January 27th, 2007 by snowy.After nearly a year of waiting I’ve been assigned a country and have received an invitation kit…urban agriculture in Senegal. Does anyone know any specifics about this? More importantly, I have the barest, most minimal, tiniest knowledge of anything agricultural. I don’t even have plants in my house. I volunteered in an organic garden for 2 days. How much of the PC is the work you’re actually doing? How screwed am I when I get to training and they realize I know NOTHING about agriculture? Answers anyone?

I wouldn’t worry too much about your lack of experience. You can learn what you need to know. I taught people how to build stoves. I knew nothing about that before I got there. However, you could contact your nearnest land grant college and find an extension agent that can send you some information about agriculture: http://www.csrees.usda.gov/qlinks/partners/state_partners.html
You can also get some good contatcs and inspiration from http://www.foodsecurity.org
Where do you live? Even if you are in an urban environment, you can get involved in a community gardening project. You will not learn more than the locals in the areea where you are going about the type of agriculture that works best there, but you have other skills that will not be obvious to you until you get there.
