Central Asia English Teaching Nomination

November 13th, 2006 by soner.

Hi, I just got nominated for the education program in central asia staging in early June. Im really excited and anxious about the whole thing! Has anyone done any of the ed. programs in central asia? Have any advice or story to tell. For instance, what is the weather like? I am currently taking TESL course, but I am also thinking of volunteering in an ESL program until I leave. Do you think this will be helpful? Is there anyone else out that has recieved a similar nomination? thanks…..

My wife and I have also been nominated to Central Asia leaving in June of ‘07. We just submitted our dental & medical paperwork 2 weeks ago. Our dental clearance was practically immediate, but the medical could be a while. I hope it will all go smoothly. At any rate, I have been teaching an ESL class at the local library for a number of months. I really enjoy it. There are challenges, but I feel like it’s the least I can do to get prepared. I lived in a 3rd world country doing volunteer work for a couple of years … and I’m still pretty anxious about getting an assignment for Mongolia or some really cold location.

I’ve been nominated for Central Asia, but July ‘07. Nomination just happened so waiting to get my paperwork in the mail so I can get on with dental/medical.

I’m volunteering at a community college ESL and literacy program - I need three months or 30 hours to qualify for my placement, but am hoping to just do it for the entire six months before I leave. IMHO, the more experience, the better so if you can volunteer in addition to the course that’d probably be really useful. Hoping to mine my ESL teacher friends for lesson plans and suggestions, too.

I’ve seen lots of blogs from PCVs and RPCVs serving in central asia online - do a search for peace corps and the country. Some of them have suggested packing lists w/comments on weather and the like. I think Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan were two countries with big blog PC blog communities.

I was just nominated today for the same program! I am also very excited, but a bit stressed as June is a lot earlier then I thought I would be leaving and it seems like there is so much to do beforehand. Teaching experience is always a good thing, I think it can only go so far. I tought in China this past year in the same town as some current PCVs, and I know that although some of them had quite a bit of teaching experience, it was still quite challenging. So don’t stress too much about it!

I’m currently serving as a TEFL volunteer in Azerbaijan. The Caucauses Region is sometimes Eastern Europe, and sometimes Central Asia. I know the 2005 staging should be in June, so this country is a possiblity. If you’re interested, please contact me and I’ll be happy tell you about my experiences here. I can be reached at kat(dot)kuebler(at)gmail(dot)com.

    Good luck with everything!

Hey, my friend’s daughter just found out she, too, is heading for Asia in June. My friend’s wondering if any of you have any idea where? The daughter’s going to be teaching English at an university. We’re just curious and checking this site for info. Menopause mamas
